[[Open the door->Talk1-2]]
[[Go outside->Living Quarters]]I unlock the door then quickly back away a few steps.
The door opens half way and a koala girl peeks outside. Another koala's face, smaller, appears beneath her.
"Thanks... Panda boy..." the girl says, inspects me, and then looks around the quarters. "Where did you come from?"
"We have a room nearby. My mom and dad are asleep and I can't wake them up. And everyone else is sleeping. And my inlays are not working either. Do you know what's happening?"
"Maybe. But we need to find mom and dad first."
"Where's mom? Who's the panda?" mumbles the smaller kid, pulling her sleeve.
"Don't worry, we'll find mom and dad," she strokes his furry head and looks at me again.
"This is Tim, my little brother. And I'm Sam," she sticks out her hand.
"Tony," I say as we shake hands.
"I'll tell you what I know then you do the same, okey?" Sam offers.

Sam starts: "We were watching the MegaBowl yesterday evening with our mom and dad.
Then the power went out. We waited for a while but it did not go back up.
Dad's a huge fan. He didn't want to miss the match, so he went out to get the power fixed.
Later we heard some noise outside and mom got nervous because dad was not coming back for quite a while.
She went out to get him and quickly returned, looking scared.
She shoved us into our bedroom and locked us inside. I heard her breathing heavily then she said "I'm going for dad, stay here," and left.
Dad's a tough guy so I'm not worried much but we need to find them," Sam wraps it up.
"Can you call her or locate her? Do your inlays work?" I ask.
"No... we... don't have those," she dodges my look.
"Don't have..." I fail to grasp her words at first. "You... You're baselines?"
"Yeah, dad says our bodies are perfect in what they do and external pads are just fine for coms and stuff," she says.
"Wow," I've heard about people without inlays but I've never met them. I scratch my head.
"What about you? Can't you use your inlays?" she looks at me.
[[Tell your side of the story ->Talk1-4]]
"I was sunbathing a lot at the top floor. You know, in the leisure zone. I love to get my fur warm while I'm coding. Apparently I overdid it a bit, got sick and dad took me to the doctor.
They said my inlays got fried because the shielding is still not perfect and you should not be exposed to the sun for so many days in a row. So my inlays needed to be replaced, otherwise it would cause me headaches and make me throw up.
Dad got a tad angry because it would cost us a lot but then he said "I'm mad but I still want to enjoy the rest of the holiday without you whining about the broken inlays." He even wanted to throw in an upgrade as an early birthday present.
So I was almost looking forward to the surgery, even though I'd miss the MegaBowl. Then they put me to sleep and when I woke up nothing worked and everyone was just sleeping. Except for you. And the guy behind the door upstairs."
"What's up with him?" Sam raises her ears.
"Well, he is not sleeping. When I saw him he was stumbling around, hitting walls and looking crazy though."
[["Did you find your parents?" she asks.->Talk1-5]]"Yeah, on a couch in our room. Tried to wake them up but they're sleeping too, like in a coma or something."
She looks down, thinking aloud, "So... Tim and I don't have inlays and yours are offline..."
"Yeah."
"But most people here probably have them," she continues.
"And now they're sleeping or crazy," we look at each other.
"Right, this whole mess seems to be connected to the inlays somehow," I say.
"Now we need to find our parents and some doctor or something to wake up yours. And everyone else. You coming with us?" Sam asks.
[[Agree ->Living Quarters][$has_sam to 1]]Pushing together we manage to open the door a little bit and then some more.
Something heavy is blocking the door, but we are are pushing it away.

"Thanks, Sam."
"No prob."

I'm in a swimming club, so let me do the job."
"But what if the guy is dang-," I try to protest-
"We need help, so we gotta risk it. And I can take care of myself."
She turns to Tim, "You stay with Tony, I'll be right back."
Then she gets on the tardigrade, regains her balance and pushes off.
Tim takes my hand, watching her paddle away.
[[Continue->Island 2]]The surface of the artifical sea is completely still.
We watch Sam paddle across the two hundred meters or so, reaching the island.
The guy is watching her come closer then they talk for a while. She drops off into the water, making a room for him on the tardigrade. He carefully climbs there. Sam pushes off and swims back, pushing the tardigrade in front of her.
They're back in a couple of minutes. I can see the guy is old. I give him a hand, he climbs off the water and drops in the sand, breathing heavily, "Thanks... Oh, I hate swimming."
"Then why get on the island?" I ask.
"Because... I love the sea. The island...," he pauses to catch his breath, "It's a peninsula during low tide. But the pumps are down... so the tide stayed high," he explains.
"I'm Bert, by the way," we shake hands.
As he rests for a minute his breathing gets slower.
<<set $has_bert to 1>>
[[Continue->Talk 2-1]]"How come you're not sleeping?" I ask impatiently. "Are your inlays broken? Or are you a baseline?"
"Well," Bert scratches his ear, "a bit of both. I switch it off when I'm off duty. Which is most of the time now, since I've retired. I'm a spacr, you know."
Cool, I've never met a spacr before. They fly to abandoned outposts and fix legacy stuff that nobody understands anymore.
"You can switch it off?"
"Yeah, sure. I've heard they don't let you do that with recent models, right?" he grins.
"Sam told me you're looking for her parents," Bert looks at me. "And that your parents are asleep. So, I think we should find a way to help everyone out of this mess. Right?"
[[Nod->Talk 2-2]]"To wake them up," Bert continues, "we'll probably need to call for help, because I suppose none of you is an expert on inlays and neither am I."
"But the first thing, we need to keep them alive and breathing. And as you can see or rather hear," he points towards the ventilation system, "no power means no air. And we will be choking in a few hours. We need to find the control room, switch on some backup power unit to get the ventilation running. I'd guess the control room is somewhere underground."
"Then we should find the coms and contact a nearby base. That's the plan. Agreed?" he looks at us.
"Agreed," says Sam.
"Agreed," says little Tim.
[["Agree"->Beach]]"We're not getting enough juice," Bert sighs.
He looks up at the solar panel array. "Hmm, it's misaligned. I'll try to fix that... Damn, access denied," he hits the control panel with his fist. Then he looks around and notices a closet with a pressure suit.
"This calls for the good old handywork." With mumbled complaints about cutting down on burritos he puts on the suit.
"Guard the base," he gives me the walkie talkie, "I'll be back soon," He disappears in the nearby airlock. After a while I see him climbing a ladder to the array platform. It's three or four floors above the ground. Pretty dangerous.
Once up there, he starts aligning the panels to face the sun, row by row, using the manual override.
[[Continue->Power Station 3]]The walkie-talkie crackles back to life.
"It's working! I can feel the breeze even here! So fresh!" shouts Sam.
"Oh my god!" she cries out and her walkie-talkie is dropped to the floor.
"What's wrong?" I blurt out, but then I recognize muted cries. "Mom! Dad! I was so worried!" Some other voices join her.
I start jumping up and down excitedly and waving at Bert. I want him to know that we've found Sam and Tim's parents. He's just finishing the alignment, turning to me. His foot slips, he stumbles and looses his balance. In the total silence of lunar atmosphere he falls off the platform, all the way down before disappearing from my view.
It was just a second, but I'm still staring, trying to understand what just happened. Tears rush into my eyes.
I drop on my knees, while listening to happy chuckles of Sam and Tim coming over the radio.
Four floors of freefall. The platform was too high.

"This guy here told me. I found him slacking off on a heap of foam scraps," she points into the open shuttle door.
I lean forward to see better and my heart jumps up. Bert is sitting there, grinning at me, "Lucky the foam was there. The leg's a bust, but I'm okay."
[[Continue->Landing Pad 2]]
<<endif>>"Enough chitchat," she interrupts us, "We have an entire base full of people to wake up."
"You know how to do that?" my jaw drops.
"Yeah, hopefully. I kinda study the phenomenon. I know a few tricks on how to get everyone back in shape. They'll have to get new inlays, though."
"So it has already happened somewhere?" Bert asks.
[[Continue->Landing Pad 3]]"Yes, it has already happened," she replies, collecting some equipment from the shuttle.
"And do you know what causes the blackout?" Bert asks curiously, "Is it some kind of a power surge?"
"Well, kind of," she replies slowly, "I have this crazy hypothesis, if you want to hear it."
We both stare at her.
"From what I've gathered, it might be a kind of a lifeform."

[[Continue->Control Room]]Bert's room is in a state of neatly organized mess. A half-open suitcase reveals a bunch of antique books and other stuff, there's a mechanical machine tore open on the bedside table. "I like tinkering with ancient stuff," smiles Bert.
Unexpectedly sweet smell lingers in the room. "I also like chewing gums," explains Bert. I don't know what that means.

"What?" Sam and I ask at the same time.
"We already ARE running on a backup power. That's probably why some doors keep working. But as it seems it's not enough to power all the systems. To get the ventilation running we'd need an external source," he studies the schematics, while we look around the room.
"A-ha!" exclaims Bert, "There's power station at the shuttle dock. The place where you landed before getting here."
"We rode a train from there," says Sam, "So do we ride it to get back there? Will it even work?"
"Hopefully...," mumbles Bert, still poking and prodding the controls, "The trouble is there isn't a direct connection between this terminal and the one at the power station. So we'll have to operate both of them manually at the same time. Which means someone has to stay here."
